What defines beauty?

- WHAT DEFINES BEAUTY? -

What defines beauty? That is such a large question; External beauty is transient as a passing breeze. Yet true beauty from within will never age. “Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety”. Therefore I feel that a person’s true beauty is internal and not external. Beauty’, influenced from the old Latin word ‘beatus’, meaning, happy, blessed. Not physically beautiful, but beautiful in characteristics. That is how I define beauty.-

You could define beauty as a flick of the hair, a graceful move, a slender frame. These things are aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but they are superficial qualities of no real consequence. They have impact of that I’m sure. But they have no sustaining importance. They are purely on the surface and have no depth. True beauty is deep within the psyche, the soul, the character, the very being of the person. -

What defines beauty? A beautiful face; But a beautiful face with no true self behind it, is not really beautiful. It is a hollow shell. It is the qualities of the person that define beauty. A true soul, compassion, selflessness, and unawareness of the beauty itself that display true beauty; A genuine and caring nature with no regard to the self defines true beauty for me. Is beauty not visual, but merely a conceptual elegance, as so perceived by mathematicians? Certainly in looking at aesthetically pleasing composition of features, mathematics is involved in the makeup.

Image gives forth the beauty but with nothing behind the pleasing appearance how could it be described as beautiful. It is one dimensional and therefore has no real importance. To be Spirituality ethereal is indeed to be beautiful. To display qualities of kindness and true caring are infinitely more beautiful than just a pretty face with perfect features. We like to look at a beautiful person because their features are mathematically in perfect harmony and proportion, therefore what we see is visually very pleasing, so yes, it is beauty, but not of the lasting kind. Fate has been kind to a beautiful woman and it can definitely help in life to be beautiful. People are drawn to beauty, they want to look at it, admire it, touch it, but this type of beauty is fleeting and it can disappear in the blink of an eye.

To define beauty is like trying to describe life itself. It’s very hard to put your finger on. I see beauty in buildings, churches and cathedrals. In defining their beauty it would be for their architecture, their pleasing lines, they do not have human qualities but they do possess character and soul. Beauty is elusive and beauty is cruel. How would I define it ultimately? A summer’s day? A perfect sunset? A babies smile? An act of compassion. Who knows! In the end I feel that beauty, like poetry is best left alone and simply appreciated and not analysed or defined. After all beauty is in the eye of the beholder so who is to say what defines beauty. -

How to stay beautiful all day long

Staying beautiful is an art of self care. A healthy glowing skin will always look beautiful than a face caked with make-up. Therefore, if you are not following a skin care regime right now, you need to start at the earliest possible time. Moving on, let’s discuss how we all can stay beautiful all day long.

Skin care

Skin care includes cleansing, toning, moisturizing at the very least. Also, scrubbing, hydrating, acne care, revitalizing and applying mask should also be included on a weekly or fortnight basis. This helps to nourish your skin and to clear away problems that could otherwise make you look older than you already are. A good skin care regime will ensure that your pores are tight and your skin flawless. If your skin is already damaged by the acne breakout or other conditions, you can use make-up, on top of your skin care to ensure that you look beautiful all day long.

Make-up

Make up is an invention that changed the life of many. It has the ability to hide flaws and make your face look smooth and flawless. In turn, it builds confidence that makes the person even more attractive. However, you must know how to use make-up to your advantage. Otherwise, you would end up with a mess than a beautiful face.

Always prepare you face before you start with your make-up. If your face is naturally oily, you will need to apply an oil control lotion or cream to control the sebum production. Otherwise, by mid-day, your make-up would be shiny and might even run. Similarly, if you have dry or flaky skin, ensure that you use sufficient moisturizer before you apply your make-up.

Make up products use elements that could be irritating to some skin. Hence, it is always best to test the product before you buy. My vote will always go to mineral make-up. Mineral makeup is light weight and would hide the pores more evenly and does not cake your face. Moreover, it is easier and convenient to re-apply than liquid or heavy foundation. Some simple make up tips will ensure that your make up could last for the entire day.

1) Layer

Layering helps to build coverage. This helps to ensure that your flaws are not visible once you are out in the sun or when you are perspiring.

2) Work from the outside

It is best to start your make up from the corner and work inside. This prevents your makeup from looking caked or more obvious at the centre and less at the side.

3) Apply downwards

Always apply your makeup in downward motion. Otherwise, your makeup would clog your pores. This could lead to more skin problems than you already have.

4) Re-apply

We can never say that the make-up would last forever. Therefore, if you have to reapply, you have to reapply. Touching up make-up, especially if you are perspiring a lot or if the weather is hot and humid, would ensure that you look beautiful all day long.

Exercise

Exercise has this unique ability to give you the glow necessary for your age. This glow would enhance your skin care as well as your make up. Since your blood circulation level would be good if you exercise, you skin would be much healthier making you look naturally beautiful.

Avoid oily food

Avoid any food or diet that gives you problem skin. This could be chocolate or fried chicken.

On the whole, looking beautiful all day long is possible for all. All you need is to take care of your skin and body and cover up the natural flaws with simple make-up techniques.

How beauty can be a curse

Victorian parents were fond of saying, “Handsome is as handsome does.”  They tried their best to prevent their children from becoming vain and self-absorbed.  Duty and virtue were more important than appearance.  Rewards and punishments were awarded on basis of performance, with no special privileges for those who happened to be particularly comely.

Our society has swung to the other extreme in its emphasis on beauty.  Beauty is a commodity that must be serviced by cosmetics, beauty rituals, diets, exercise equipment, and even surgery.  The beautiful live in constant awareness that their beauty will not endure forever.  When age gives them a face like a dried apple, what will happen to their self-esteem?  When society encourages young people to build their self-worth on their appearance, they are truly cursed because their value is determined by something they cannot control.  Age, accidents, or disease can take away that beautiful face and body, without mercy.

When beauty is over-valued, beautiful people can not be sure whether they are esteemed for who they are, or for the accident of their appearance.  This creates such insecurity that a single pimple is a major disaster.  What greater curse can there be than wondering whether one’s spouse’s love will endure after the bloom and vigor of youth are gone?  Is the relationship based on true love, or nothing more than the acquisition of a trophy to be paraded in front of others?

On the flip side, beauty often attracts vindictiveness from those envious people who feel put down by the very existence of someone more attractive than themselves.  They will project all kinds of character defects on the unfortunate beauty.  A kind and loving person may be accused of being selfish, conceited, and just plain nasty, just because s/he is exceptionally good-looking.  This type of destructive punishment can turn life into hell.

A beautiful face and body may open up career opportunities, but it can also be an invitation to exploitation.   In his Satires, the ancient Roman poet Juvenal said that parents should be grateful if their girls were humpbacked, because they would not attract unwanted attention and become playthings for nobility.  Not much has changed since then.

Obsession with personal beauty defies common sense.  A good friend with a physical deformity is worth far more than a beautiful betrayer.  A generous, devoted mother will give her children a good start in life no matter how she looks.  Anyone who has come to believe that being beautiful is all that is required for success in life and relationships is truly cursed.

For a healthy, balanced person, the advantages of beauty probably outweigh the disadvantages.  However, for the person who is lacking a sense of perspective, society’s obsession with beauty can inflict intolerable stress and ravage self-worth.  To break the curse, we must recover our understanding that true beauty is internal, not external.
