Skin care basics for dry skin

Your skin covers every inch of your body, and keeps all the bits and pieces where they should be, so it’s very important to take good care of it. The skin is also your shop window – everyone can see at least some of it. As if that wasn’t enough responsibility for a body organ to carry, the skin is the protective barrier that keeps the worst effects of the environment from penetrating the body.

While everyone’s skin is individual in sime respects, there are four broad types – normal, dry, oily and combination. Each skin type requires slightly different care, so your skin care routine should be tailored to your skin type. Dry skin is not normal – it is drier than is desirable, whether slightly or severely. These are the basic skin care strategies for dry skin.

Internal beauty treatment

What you eat and drink affects the condition of your skin. The body needs water, and so does the skin, so it’s important to stay hydrated. Dry skin in particular needs water, so drink as much as you can. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can take moisture away from the skin.

Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, especially those with high water content, such as melons, grapes and salad vegetables. Aim for a high intake of vitamins A, B and C from citrus fruits, berries, dairy products and leafy green vegetables. Vitamin E is also helpful for dry skin. Find it in nuts, seeds and oils, as well as wholegrains. Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids such as oily fish and nuts will encourage the skin’s natural oil production.

Cleansing

Cleanse your skin twice a day – morning and evening. Avoid soap, particularly if you have dry skin. Choose a facial wash for your skin type, and look for a product with added moisturisers. Use warm water, as hot or cold water may irritate the skin. If your skin is very dry, it may be better to use moisturising facial wipes for cleansing, rather than wash off cleansers.

Never use a toner on dry skin, particularly one that contains alcohol. If you want to freshen your skin after cleansing, splash with cool – not cold – water, and pat dry with a soft towel. Don’t rub the skin, as this could encourage fine lines and wrinkles, particularly with skin that already has a tendency to dryness.

Moisturising

Care tips for oily skin

Having oily skin can feel like a real curse for the one who possesses it. While the skin requires non-stop moisturizing, the person who has such skin type can never seem to find the perfect product and skin break-outs are just around the corner for them. Oily skin is that which glows only with a dense layer of naturally produced oil, is thick and has a perpetual dull color, all attributes that one would never wish to face. Where it seems difficult for one to care for sensitive skin, it is just as hard to maintain this type.

Oily skin generally takes its birth from the age of adolescence where hormonal imbalances are at their rise. With the aging of the skin the production of the oil producing glands decreases but while they exist, the skin is a bane to manage.

A maximum of 3 face washings should be made in throughout the whole day and when doing so, use only hot water so that the oil residues are completely removed.

- Mud in the true nature is a drying ingredient but at the same time includes natural balancing ingredients. Applying a mud mask could help reduce oil formations for a few hours.

- Soft drinks are the biggest enemy for oily skin types due to its sugar content which too should be reduced in consumption.

- If you eat oily foods then it’s a given that your body will produce oil and with all that combined, your skin will suffer with double the quantity. Therefore cut down on the junk foods and the deep fried snacks.

- A good amount of sleep is a need without say, so one must invest in a good 7 to 8 hours of sound sleep to relax the pores and allow them for oxygen.

Tips for winter skin care

Winter is the season of the year where dry skin hits many hard while many others are prone to it, thus resulting in a change in ones skin care routine to protect and take care of our skin during the crisp, cold winter months. Here are my top tips on winter skin care:

Cleanse your skin with a suitable cleanser for your skin type, you do not have to spend a lot of money on this, just pop down to your local drugstore and look around. Personally, ‘Olay’ have in produce a great moisturising cleanser for all skin types.

Next, using a cotton wool pad apply the toner to your face. This will remove any residue from the cleanser and close your pores, it also makes in the moisturiser seep into your skin more. I recommend a Vitamin E toner, as they are suitable for sensitive skin as well as all skin types, while also healing and protecting the skin.

Finally, apply a moisturiser every day, preferably with added SPF, as the sun is always there. It will save your skin, and definitely make sure that your skin stays looking youthful for longer. Look for a moisturiser that is appropriate for your skin type.

Exfoliating your skin and face is a must during the winter, in order to remove the dry skin and replace them with smooth skin. A homemade exfoliator such as olive oil mixed with sugar is a great way to exfoliate and moisturise your skin thoroughly. Do this 3 times a week for maximum benefits. Or use a body wash with an exfoliating mitt to stimulate cell renewal, reduce cellulite and while also sloughing away dead skin cells. You can use the mitt with the homemade concoction for added stimulation and results for your skin.

Apply a moisturiser to your skin every day in order to retain elasticity, smooth skin and hydrate your skin in order so it looks and feels at its best. ‘Vaseline Intensive Care’ range is good for the winter to moisturise your skin, but not leave it looking at all greasy.

While winter might make your prone to dryer skin, it still needs to be taken care of not neglected, therefore follow this great skin care routine, and before you know it, you’ll be enjoying the winter season and having absolutely beautiful skin the whole way.
